No, a plastic cover can't fix this disaster.

We have all been culprits—keeping furniture for far too long, far too many times. You, dear reader, are not the first, and definitely will not be the last. Those rips in your sofa do not add as much character as you think, and that raggedy old lamp just does not light up the room like it used to—but we’re here to help. Here are five telltale signs it is time to go shopping for new furniture:

1
1. The rips in your sofa are so big, that if it were a person, you would be shaking the doctor’s hand and making funeral arrangements.

Okay, so you and your sofa have been through some of your favorite memories together—but let’s face it…it has more scraps and cuts than a six year old that just learned how to bike ride. Do yourself a favor and stop marinating in its open sores.

2. The shade on your lamp is so transparent that it is like not having a lampshade at all.

Some people like bright light, but chances are, if you have a lampshade, you are not one of those people.

3. People tell you your home is “so [insert insulting decade here].”

If someone tells you your apartment has such an “80s style” and you were born in 1994, trust me, it isn’t a good thing. Make your furniture current.

4. Your guests would rather stand than sit.

No one REALLY likes to stand all night—trust me, this is a cry for help.

5. You finally went on Pinterest and uttered the words “wait…that’s real?!”

Yes. It is real. It is all real. All of these glorious furniture pieces exist, and are calling your name—answer them.

The space you live in can have a significant effect on your mood and well-being. These findings go way back to the ancient Chinese and their philosophy/art “Feng Shui” and is also supported by scientific fundamentals. There are ways to decorate and rearrange your living space such that you feel energized and comfortable. When you feel good, you can think more clearly and more positive. A good mood may influence your life more than you think!

Here are 5 tips for a simple home makeover which will enhance your mood and well-being.

Fill your home with light to light up your life

A well-lit home removes half the darkness from your life. During daytime, try letting as much sunlight into your home as possible. Sunlight has been scientifically proven to increase the production of endorphins and serotonins – the feel good hormones! Make sure that the artificial lights in your home are sufficiently bright. Insufficient lighting can create a dull atmosphere, and you might end up feeling depressed for no reason.

Add greenery wherever possible

Just like natural light helps elevate your mood, so does natural vegetation. Use ornamental plants to decorate your home. Place ornamental and flowering plants on your balcony. Having natural beauty around you will help you feel closer to nature. Use the extra oxygen that these plants provide to jazz up a bit!

Use your favourite color

Experts say that at least 20% of your rooms should have your favourite color. Blue and green are known to be soothing colors, while orange is energetic, and yellow is joyful. Avoid red, which is associated with anger and danger. Have milder versions of these colors for your walls, while you can have the brighter shades for your furniture, or a chosen featured wall.

De-clutter your home

Remove all unnecessary items and keep your home tidy. An untidy, cluttered home is a reflection of a confused mind, filled with unnecessary thoughts and problems. Clean up your living space, and feel how your mind is getting cleared of all negativity, and opens up for positivity.

Smell nice, feel nice

Finally, try shopping for those room fresheners or the likes that fill your room with a refreshing fragrance. It could be even worthwhile to invest in the high tech variety of automated fragrance dispensers. Alternatively, use scented candles to spread the fragrance to every corner of your room. A nice fragrance can brighten up your mood.

Start today with at least one of these small “interventions” and add gradually. You will see that small changes in your living spaces can make a big difference in the way think and feel. Good luck !

Decorating your room according to your own style will create a space with personality. Every single room in your house can be designed completely around your individuality. Start by picking your favorite space and decorate this room with accessories you love, and colors that inspire you. Follow my tips for fearlessly adding color and character to your favorite room.

The first thing everyone always thinks about when creating a new look for a room is: “Which color do we choose for the walls?” My tip is not to begin with your wall color, end with it! Once you start assembling the fabrics, furniture and accessories in your favorite color and pattern, the perfect wall color will reveal itself.

Always use a neutral and an accent color. For “living” spaces, it is a good idea to have a balance of warm and cool shades. My preference is to choose one warm shade and one cool one. The bolder the accent color the less of that color your space will require. Depending on how bold your accents are, they should fill up the color in your room with no more than 5 – 25%.

Decorating by using light to dark shades of a single color  will make a room look more luxurious than your budget might suggest. Focus on adding interesting twists with a wide variety of textures, from stone, steel, glass, and matte to fabric and leather. Monochromatic (shades of the same color family) schemes create a sophisticated, elegant look and have a calming effect.

Don’t know how to start finding the right colors for your room? Consult your closet for cues to colors or combinations that you will love in your home. If you can pick wardrobe colors, you can decorate. A quality wardrobe is built on investment pieces, complemented with the essentials and brought to life by accessories. Design is built in exactly the same way. We pick colors for our daily wardrobe because they make us feel good. For the same reason you should pick new colors and textures you like for your interior. When you decorate in the spirit of love and happiness, finding the perfect colors for your room is easy.
