Decorating your room according to your own style will create a space with personality. Every single room in your house can be designed completely around your individuality. Start by picking your favorite space and decorate this room with accessories you love, and colors that inspire you. Follow my tips for fearlessly adding color and character to your favorite room.

The first thing everyone always thinks about when creating a new look for a room is: “Which color do we choose for the walls?” My tip is not to begin with your wall color, end with it! Once you start assembling the fabrics, furniture and accessories in your favorite color and pattern, the perfect wall color will reveal itself.

Always use a neutral and an accent color. For “living” spaces, it is a good idea to have a balance of warm and cool shades. My preference is to choose one warm shade and one cool one. The bolder the accent color the less of that color your space will require. Depending on how bold your accents are, they should fill up the color in your room with no more than 5 – 25%.

Decorating by using light to dark shades of a single color  will make a room look more luxurious than your budget might suggest. Focus on adding interesting twists with a wide variety of textures, from stone, steel, glass, and matte to fabric and leather. Monochromatic (shades of the same color family) schemes create a sophisticated, elegant look and have a calming effect.

Don’t know how to start finding the right colors for your room? Consult your closet for cues to colors or combinations that you will love in your home. If you can pick wardrobe colors, you can decorate. A quality wardrobe is built on investment pieces, complemented with the essentials and brought to life by accessories. Design is built in exactly the same way. We pick colors for our daily wardrobe because they make us feel good. For the same reason you should pick new colors and textures you like for your interior. When you decorate in the spirit of love and happiness, finding the perfect colors for your room is easy.

Styling your Home

Contemporary generally denotes something that is “up-to-date” or “new”. Just as you keep yourself updated about everything happening around you, and give your personality a contemporary look, styling your home in a contemporary way is also important. Here are a few tips on transforming your home into the home of your dreams:

1. Starting off

The first step is to carefully analyse your home, and decide which part of your house needs urgent attention. Many times, it turns out that all your furniture and furnishings that you once bought so passionately, are actually still very beautiful, and all that is needed is a re-positioning. A carefully thought through re-arrangement of existing furniture can create tremendous appeal, and make your house look “new”. So, wisely analyse your home, and judiciously decide if you really need a complete makeover, or just a few replacements.

2. Hunting for the “right choice”

Once you have narrowed down the list of furniture and furnishings that you want to buy, try to invest some time in searching for the furniture that really excites you. Don’t settle on buying something that you are not fully convinced about. You could either go out and do some window shopping at your favourite furniture store or mall, or sit down with your laptop and try hunting for the most modern furniture available out there, by browsing through the various e-stores. The advantage of online shopping is that you can browse through a lot more options (without all the fatigue associated with roaming around a vast furniture mall) and you might stumble upon something so amazing (while within your budget), you might never have spotted in your local furniture store.

3. Remember, whatever new piece(s) you buy, it has to blend in with your existing furniture

Unless you are thinking of a complete makeover, or moving into a new house where you want everything new, you will have to bear in mind that whatever new furniture you are buying, it should match your existing ones, and not stand out oddly. Choosing and sticking to a certain color theme is the best way moving forward. Browse through some home decorating websites to have an idea of the various ongoing trends.

4. Less is always the best

A home with too many furniture cluttered together, does not look good, and is tough to keep tidy. Decide on a minimalistic way of decorating your home, and do not overdo the styling.

5. Accessorizing your home

Whereas furniture are the basic requirements to make your home look fab, accessorizing your house is also equally important in creating that great, contemporary look. So, go shop for some fabulous lampshades, contemporary floor lamps, ceiling light fixtures or modern table lamps. You could consult a professional to get advice on the lighting arrangement that can give your house a modern or contemporary look, while creating illusions of a bigger space. Other accessories include modern dining room sets, table-top candle-stands, modern mirrors for your walls, nice wallpapers or wall decoration stickers, modern bath vanities for your bathroom, installing modern indoor fireplaces or fire-lamps, and, often the most effective, putting lots and lots of pictures of you and your loved ones everywhere around your house.

6. Choosing the right furnishing

By carefully selecting and regularly changing the furnishings in your home – be it the bedding, sofas, cushions, curtains, or duvets, you can change the visual appeal of your house. So go ahead and shop for the most exciting furnishings in town – with a little bit of ingenuity, you could create a real makeover for your home, by only investing in furnishings!
